MASON, Mich. (WLNS) – Our local law enforcement got into the holiday spirit tonight by taking part in the 18th Annual “Shop With a Hero” event in Mason.
It’s called “Shop With a Hero” for that exact reason. Law enforcement officers from across the capital area got a $100 gift card, partnered with a kid to be their shopping buddy, and together made Christmas a little brighter for their families.
“Today I am buying presents for my little brother. He likes nerf guns and play do,” said 10-year-old Malakki Soffredine.
Soffredine is one of sixty-five kids who got to shop for Christmas gifts for their families tonight as part of the annual “Shop with a Hero” event.
“Being able to give these kids some things they might not otherwise get for the holidays is huge for us,” said Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth.
“It’s something special for him. He’s been through a lot over the past years,” said Alan Hile, whose grandson shopped with an officer tonight.
Hile says he usually doesn’t get opportunities like this.
“It gives him a chance to shop for people he loves and cares about,” said Hile.
So he’s thankful those who protect and serve us stayed after hours, showing the community they care.
“It’s great that they come out and show their support to the kids and show that they are heroes and let the kids and families see what they do,” said Hile.
The event took place at the Meijer store in Mason. Each family also got a food basket filled with a ham, turkey, and everything they need to cook a full Christmas dinner.
