A petition to remove Jackson Co. Sheriff Steven Rand is going around calling to “Recall Rand.” Dean Schuette is the one who started the petition after Rand was caught on tape making discriminating comments towards, women, minorities and people with disabilities.
Marla Gilpin is a Jackson County resident and wants Rand gone. After the comments were released to the public, she says she just wants to feel safe.
“No one should be discriminated against. It’s our right as the citizens of this city and county to expect protection from law enforcement that support and protects all the people.
The petition has 60 days to get over fifteen thousand signatures to get on the May ballot. Which Schuette thinks won’t be an issue.
“We certainly are not going to give up. We’ve got another four months after that that we can still obtain enough signatures to put on the November ballot, but I don’t see it going to that degree. I really think we really have got enough support and enough help that we’re going to be able to get on the May ballot,” said Schuette.
Whether they get the signatures within 60 days or not, others are saying letting Rand continue in office isn’t an option.
“Just because you don’t wanna leave, doesn’t mean you cannot leave, because we are going to make you leave,” said one petition signer, Susan Murdie.
Rand didn’t have a comment at the time 6 News reached out the Jackson Co. Sheriff’s office today, but he did admit it was his voice in the recordings, but still refuses to resign.
