Engler could remain MSU President for another year

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – It could be another year before MSU hires a new president.

That news comes as MSU Interim President John Engler is under fire for e-mails sent claiming some of Larry Nassar’s victims are being “manipulated by trial lawyers.”

One university trustee is demanding an apology and another says Engler should “think long and hard about whether he is the right person  for this job.”

We asked our friends and fans on Facebook whether they think Engler should stay or go and our poll, though it’s not scientific, shows an overwhelming number of people say he needs to resign.

6 News learned today that he could be on the job for another year while school officials look for a permanent replacement.

It has been almost five months since former President Lou Anna Simon called it quits.

But Trustee Dianne Byrum, who is helping lead the search for her replacement, says the timeline doesn’t have that person starting until June of 2019.

The MSU Board of Trustees spent the past four months hiring a search adviser, Teresa Sullivan from the University of Virginia, to lead the search in finding a new president.

Now they’re working on organizing listening sessions starting this summer in hopes to find a new, permanent person for the job.

“As we develop what are the qualities we’re looking for in the next president of the university, that’s not a dictate from the board,” said Byrum. “That is a community conversation and coming together on that.”

Byrum says after the listening sessions are over, the board will then hire a search firm to put together a list of candidates, then move to form a search committee within the university.

“We need to go across campus and the stakeholder community, the greater MSU community, and listen,” said Byrum.

Byrum says the board hopes to have a new president in office by June 2019, which means Engler, if he keeps the job, would stay in office for another year.

“It needs to be done right,” said Byrum. “We need to have a successful search and we need to get that started immediately and completed as soon as reasonably possible.”
