Follow these tips to stay safe near your grill

(WLNS) – Lots of people will fire up the grill this weekend and where there’s smoke, there could be fire.

In fact, the U.S. Fire Administration says almost 6,000 grill fires happen each year, causing $37 million in damage.

Before you fire up the grill to prepare those delicious holiday meals, we’ve got some safety tips for you to keep in mind.

Check the gas tank hoses for leaks before using it for the first time each year.

Before filling up a cylinder, check it for dents or gouges.

Never turn on the gas when the lid is closed.

When finished with the grill, turn off the barbecue burners and the propane cylinder.

Six out of seven grill fires involves a gas grill, caused most often by a leak or break in hoses or other equipment.
