UPDATE (1:15 p.m. – AP) – Authorities have identified an Illinois man as the gunman who fatally shot a Virginia state trooper at a bus station in Richmond.

State Police identified the man Friday as 34-year-old James Brown III of Aurora, Ill.

Police say Brown shot Trooper Chad P. Dermyer several times at the Greyhound bus station Thursday before Brown was killed by two other troopers.

Police have not said what motivated the shooting.

Authorities say two women were also injured in the shooting but are expected to recover.

One of them is a member of the Bingham University track team who was heading to a meet at William & Mary.

UPDATE (8:41 pm. – WLNS) – The Virginia state trooper who was shot multiple times and died in the Greyhound bus station shooting in Virginia is a native of Jackson, Michigan, according to the Virginia State Police Facebook page. Chad Dermyer is survived by his wife and two children. Dermyer was taken to a local hospital in Richmond, Virginia where he later died from his injuries.

The gunman is also dead. Officials in Virginia have not released the gunman’s name.

UPDATE (8:35 p.m.) – RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – A gunman and a Virginia State Trooper are dead after the suspect open fired at a Greyhound bus station on North Boulevard in Richmond. The VSP announced that 37-year-old Trooper Chad Phillip Dermyer died as a result of his gunshot wounds. Police have yet to release the suspect’s name but they say that the suspect had a criminal past.Shooting Summary:

  • One trooper – shot, dead
  • Two female bystanders – shot, injured

In addition to the one trooper who was shot, four other bystanders at the scene were also injured; two were shot.

According to Virginia State Police, troopers were alerted at 2:45 p.m. to a shooting incident at the Greyhound Bus Station at 2910 N. Boulevard in the City of Richmond.

The incident occurred during a VSP training exercise, according to officials. During the exercise, troopers were questioning passengers getting off of buses. It was at this point that an unidentified person, who was departing a bus, shot a trooper in the chest. The suspect was unprovoked and the trooper was not wearing a bullet-proof vest.

The FBI, a SWAT team, and Richmond and State Police officers were dispatched in response to the incident. Within moments, four ambulances had reported back to the VCU Medical Center with the injured.

“This is one of the saddest days I’ve seen in the city of Richmond, and I’ve been here all my life,” said City Council Member Reeva Trammell, who chairs the council’s Public Safety Committee.

Richmond Police and Virginia State Police troopers are still at the scene of the Greyhound bus station on North Boulevard in Richmond. The incident remains under investigation at this time.

VSP originally reported that two troopers were shot, one fatally, and one bystander was shot. They corrected the details at a press conference held at the scene.

In addition, four bystanders at the scene were injured; two were shot.

According to Virginia State Police, troopers were alerted at 2:45 p.m. to a shooting incident at the Greyhound Bus Station at 2910 N. Boulevard in the City of Richmond.

Officials have confirmed that two troopers and one female civilian were shot and have been transported to VCU Medical Center for treatment. The shooting suspect, who was shot by a state trooper, is dead.

City officials released the following statement:

Mayor Jones has been fully briefed on the shooting incident on the Boulevard at the Greyhound Bus Station. He is in constant contact with Richmond Police Chief Al Durham. The matter is under the jurisdiction of the Virginia State Police and Richmond Police officials are fully engaged and acting in a supporting role at this time.

Mayor Jones has also made contact with Governor Terry McAuliffe and the City and State are working collaboratively to respond to this incident.

The Mayor is asking citizens to avoid the impacted area to allow law enforcement and emergency responders to function as efficiently as possible in responding to this incident and stabilizing the scene.

Greyhound has also released a statement regarding the incident:

Our Richmond, Va. station is closed until further notice and we are actively working with the authorities.

Our public safety team and I will continue to monitor the situation and support State Police and local authorities in their response and investigation of this incident.”
