From Homeless Veteran to Advocate

News

Steven Adams served in the United States Navy from 1981-86.

Like many other Veterans, he fell on hard times and was homeless. After two months on the streets, he met a social worker at a homeless shelter who changed the course of his life.

“She made me aware of the homeless program, and set me up in the homeless program and I ended up being housed”

Now Adams is one of the Veterans that volunteer’s at the Capital Area Stand Down Event. An Event that is designed to connect Veterans to Programs like the one that helped him.

For 16 years, New Hope Community Center with Holy Cross Services has partnered with the U.S Department of Veteran Affairs to host the event.

Veterans can receive free medical check-ups, legal advice, haircuts, and housing and employment applications.
