INGHAM COUNTY, MI (WLNS) – More than 1,000 safety patrols from the tri-county area gathered at Hawk Island Park in Lansing Tuesday for the annual police and fire Field Day and Safety Patrol Picnic.
The safety patrols were treated to hot dogs, snacks and cold pop.
There were also hands-on demonstrations from police and fire departments including tracking dogs, a mounted posse and a helicopter.
“It’s a reinforcement for the kids to kinda keep them on the straightened arrow during the school year to keep them on task. It’s a great recruitment tool for the younger kids coming up through the ranks they want to come to picnic and it’s also a great way for the kids to see so many different aspects of their community,” said Suzy Carter, executive director, Lansing Area Safety Council.
Tuesday’s fun was made possible by more than 200 volunteers from groups including local Kiwanis Clubs, UAW retirees and Eastern High Key Club members.
