LANSING - UPDATE: A gas leak has been stopped and people are back to work along a stretch of REO Town. Consumers Energy crews stopped the leak less than an hour after it started.
The leak did prompt police to close the 1100 block of S. Washington Ave. to traffic and ask people in homes and businesses nearby to leave.
UPDATE: Officials say construction crews hit the Consumers Energy line, prompting the leak. The company has a crew of its own on the scene to shut down the line.
ORIGINAL STORY: Lansing police have evacuated a block of REO Town because of a gas leak and shut down the main street there.
The 1100 block of South Washington Ave. closed around 1:45 p.m. so crews could plug the leak.
Crews from both the Lansing Board of Water and Light and Consumers Energy are on the scene with Lansing police and firefighters.
