Governor Snyder’s popularity may be tainted after the Flint water crisis

LANSING, MI (WLNS)- After the Flint water crisis, some critics are placing blame on one person, Governor Rick Snyder.

A Lansing polling expert gives his predictions on Snyder’s popularity.

“He’s probably glad he’s not running for re-election” Bernie Porn, President of EPIC-MRA said.

Bernie Porn has done polling for more than 40 years. According to Porn, in a survey done last year, Governor Snyder’s favorability was one point higher than President Barack Obama’s. But now that the Flint water crisis has made national headlines, Porn’s not so confident the public can forgive.

“This has affected you know, whatever number of children in the Flint area. I mean that could be the kind of thing that people can be very unforgiving about.” Porn said.

“The people of Flint are going to have a period of time where they will not be able to drink the water for a very, very, long time. And this story is not going to end it may not end before even the end of Governor Snyder’s term.” Bernie Porn said.

According to Porn a large issue like this one can have a major negative impact on Snyder’s legacy.

“All of the things that he feels he deserved credit for, people may forget all about that based on this one issue and based on how they react to it.” Porn said.

Whether its Snyder’s fault, or his team, according to Porn only time will tell how the public truly feels.

“Yes, his team made a mistake but just like he said in the State of the State address, the buck stops with him.” Porn said.

“But I take full responsibility to fix the problem so that it never happens again” Snyder said during the State of the State address on January 19th.

And while some critics ask Snyder to resign, according to Porn regardless of Snyder’s term, it’s going to take time solving Flint’s problem.
