LANSING, Mich. (AP) – A Michigan group is seeking to put a ban on horizontal hydraulic fracturing up for a statewide vote in November 2016.

Secretary of State spokesman Fred Woodhams says Friday that petition language will be discussed Tuesday at a Board of State Canvassers meeting.

The elections board will decide whether to approve the language submitted by the Committee to Ban Fracking in Michigan. If the language is approved, the group would begin signature collection.

The group will need to collect 252,523 valid signatures by June 1, 2016, to move the proposal toward being on that November’s ballot.

The petition language calls for prohibiting the use of horizontal hydraulic fracturing, which is sometimes referred to as fracking. It would also prohibit processing, storing or disposing of wastes created by fracking.
