Lost generation: grandparents raising children during opioid crisis

Health News

According to research by the Census Bureau, states that prescribe opioids at a higher rate have a larger population of grandparents raising grandchildren.

The five-years of data show a growing trend among grandparents who step in to raise children whose parents are unable to raise them because of a substance abuse disorder.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 16% of U.S. counties provided enough opioid prescriptions for every person to have one. In Michigan, the opioid prescription rate for every 100 people is over 80% while the national average is less than 67%.
