After a year of construction, Looking Glass Brewing Company is finally open and ready for business but customers may be surprised at what they find when they walk through the door.
Between the brews, views, and the food menu.. there’s a little something for all beer and wine enthusiasts at Looking Glass Brewing Co. in DeWitt.
Lansing natives, Joel Dillingham and his partner Lee Streeter are co-owners of the brewery.
Boiling up their own beer, right below the bar.
However, this isn’t an ordinary brewery, Looking Glass has a unique twist.
It’s located inside the historic Mount Hope Church.
“Had we not stepped in and decided to move forward, last summer probably would have been the last days of the church,” says Dillingham.
The former church was built in the 1800’s.
Dillingham says it had been vacant for several years.
The duo bought the building from the city last year and have since been working to bring it buzzing back to life.
“We wanted to try to preserve the layout of the building as much as we could for those that have been here before it’s something they can recognize when they come in,” says Dillingham.
Today the unique space that was once lined with church pews, is now home to a bar, kitchen, and a dining space for nearly 100 customers.
Saving pieces of the past and looking forward to the future.
“The stained glass, the hardwood floors, I think that’s kind of what hopefully people take away when they come in here,” says Dillingham.
The brewery currently features seven beers on tap. It also has two types of cider, red and white wine.
