Hundreds gather for Mason’s 16th annual holiday celebration

MASON, Mich. (WLNS) – Christmas is in the air, well in the city of Mason it is as the 16th Annual Holiday Celebration kicked off earlier tonight.

“A lot of people come out…it’s similar to Silver Bells but we always say it’s like a lighter version of it,” Mason Chamber of Commerce Program Assistant Emily Fenger said.

Rain or shine, thousands of people lined the streets downtown to gaze at the holiday floats decked out in Christmas lights.

“It’s good to see everybody come out and have a good time and get into the holiday spirit,” Mason Local Joe Orlowski stated.

And the crowd favorite…

“You know I think the fire flame was my favorite you know I think it was a hot air balloon flame,” Mark Wyklige said.

”What was your favorite part of the parade tonight?” asked 6 News Reporter Alysia Burgio.

“I got to go with the flames too,” said Quinn Haywood.

This year 37 floats made their way through downtown and Mason city employee Emily Fenger says the city prepares for the celebration well in advance.

“It does take a decent amount of planning, we start working on it several months out,” said Fenger.

To start the holiday festivities off right, as part of tradition…the annual lighting of the Christmas tree took place.

”It was just kind of a cool thing to see and all the people,” Wyklige stated.

There’s one thing that’s certain about this holiday celebration…sure, it may seem like a traditional parade but it’s the comradery between people in the community that bring people back year after year.

“We’ll be back, it was a lot of fun, a lot of good people, friendly atmosphere,” Wyklige said.

“Everybody comes together and they have fun and enjoy themselves to get ready for the holiday,” Orlowski added.
