LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Several local school districts have announced Thursday will be a half-day because of high temperatures.

Mid-Michigan temperatures are forecast to be in the low 90s on Thursday, with heat indexes over 100 degrees in some locations.

Jackson Public Schools (JPS) will operate on a half-day schedule on Thursday. JPS released the following statement:

“When the temperature outside is in the upper 90s, our buildings, especially Jackson High School, will feel over 100. I am sorry for the inconvenience but wanted to get this information to our community as soon as possible. Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year. It is going to be a great year to be a Viking.”

East Jackson Community Schools will also operate as a half-day Thursday.

Northwest Schools canceled all outdoor games and practices Wednesday evening.

Varsity football players are asked to check in with their coach. Lansing’s Everett and Sexton game was moved to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Holt High School Football at Mason is now set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Ionia Public Schools will also have a half-day due to the temperature.
