Lansing Fire Department remembers fallen firefighters

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The Lansing Fire Department has had a tough couple of months. Within the last year it’s lost some of its own, mourning the losses of Dennis Rodeman who died in the line of duty as well as Captain Steve Babcock.

Today firefighters and police officers stood together to remember those who came before them.

“The real purpose of this weekend is to recognize every member, those who have done a great service for their community, for their country.”

“Today is something we’ve been doing a long time. This is not different this year because of the events of the last year, between Dennis and his line of duty death and Captain Steve Babcock from his sudden illness,” Michael Tobin, City of Lansing Chief of Emergency Management said.

“Life goes on, but part of that going on is also remembering,” Retired LFD firefighter Dave Weisenberg said.

“On behalf of all Lansing residents, it’s my honor to pay tribute,” Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero said.

“This is where we stand shoulder to shoulder and remember everyone and everything that is the meaning of the Lansing Fire Department,” Tobin said.

“I submit to you today that one does not have to lay his life down on foreign soil to be revered. He or she does not have to go to battle to be a hero.”

“The men and women who put these firefighter uniforms on are fighting battles every day as well,” Weisenberg said.

“Because of those who have gone before them, choosing the life of sacrifice and service, they answered the call to pay the ultimate price.”

“We’re left hopefully, with just the pleasant memories,” Bernero said. “The people they were.”

“My father was on the job before me. He passed away before he could retire, so this is part of my remembrance of him as well,” Weisenberg said.

“We never know when we’re gonna be called, but you answer that alarm. You answer that call every day,” Bernero said.

“We’ve been fighting fire in the city since the 1850’s and we’re going to be here for a very long time and we’re not gonna forget anyone that’s come before us,” Tobin said.
