A Lansing man is dead after drowning at a campground in nearby Ionia County.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Ionia County dispatchers say they got a call from the Lakeside Resort and Campground. That’s on the 700 block of E. Grand River in Orange Township.

Authorities say he was fishing with a friend when he fell into the lake. Several kids nearby saw that he was in trouble and went to get help.

Bystanders got him out of the water and tried to perform CPR. Emergency crews got there and took over, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities identify the man as 47-year-old Pedro Lira of Lansing. They say he might have had a pre-existing medical condition that caused him to fall into the water. The investigation continues.
