INGHAM COUNTY, Mich. (WLNS) – We’re not the only ones giving back this holiday season….
The Ingham County Bar Foundation is a group of local lawyers who raise money throughout the year and then donate it to charities in the community.
An official with St. Vincent Catholic Charities told 6 News today she couldn’t be more thankful.
“It means so much for people who are in the field to show how much they respect the work being done by their colleagues, by fellow attorneys,” said Tamara Watson, the director of development at St. Vincent Catholic Charities.
It’s the season of giving here in mid-Michigan and lawyers in Ingham County are doing their part to give back.
“We’re doing seven grants and we’re rewarding those next week. It’s our largest grant award ever, $17,500,” said Jason Hanselman, the president of the Ingham County Bar Foundation.
Hanselman says the group makes it a priority to support charities that live by the bar foundation’s mission of promoting access to justice and legal services.
“We all are on the same page here and it’s really, our goal is really intersection between the legal system and charitable giving and so we really feel the appreciation when we reward these grants,” said Hanselman.
One of the organizations receiving a grant this year is St. Vincent Catholic Charities.
Watson says the money will go toward its Immigration Law Clinic.
“It’s incredibly important to have competent legal services and services that are affordable,” said Watson. “Often when you need an attorney, it’s during a very difficult time in your life.”
So she says receiving this grant means the world to the 3,000 people who benefit from St. Vincent’s each year.
“We’re so grateful to the foundation who recognizes the good work that’s being done and is helping and support us,” said Watson.
Other organizations receiving grants include The Firecracker Foundation, Small Talk Children’s Assessment Center, and the Ingham County Sobriety Court Foundation.
The official award ceremony will take place next week.
