JACKSON, MI (WLNS) - UPDATE: Tracy Lawrence did take the stand in his defense this morning as the trial enters its second week.
Lawrence took the stand at 9:15.
He told the court he woke up, heard a rattling on a cellar door, looked outside and saw two men trying to get into truck and garage.
Lawrence said he grabbed a rifle, went on the front porch and yelled at them to get off the property.
He said he fired two shots into the ground as a warning, but he fired on the men when they started running toward him.
Prosecutors have pointed out inconsistencies in his police interviews about what happened.
But Lawrence says that's because he was shaken up and scared during the initial interview.
Prosectors have also questioned if Lawrence could have shot and killed the men from his porch, given the vantage point he had.
Closing statements in the trial could begin as early as today.
Murder or self defense?
