UPDATE: Hillsdale Co. Sheriff’s deputies locate body of drowning victim

UPDATE: Hillsdale County Sheriff’s deputies have located the body of a 62-year-old man who drowned at South Sand Lake off Hallett Road.

Multiple agencies responded to initial reports of a drowning Saturday afternoon near Gateway Campground. The man had entered the water and did not resurface.

Deputies responded to the scene and spoke with family members, also responding were members from Hillsdale Twp. Fire department along with Montgomery Fire & Rescue, Somerset Fire & Rescue, Jefferson Township Fire Department, Hillsdale City Fire Department and Fremont Indiana Fire & Rescue.

Rescue efforts were called off around 3:30 p.m. and emergency personnel switched to a recovery mission. The search went on close to the shore at the South end of the lake.

Saturday at 5:30 p.m. divers from the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office recovered the body of Raymond Lyle Gibson from Hillsdale.   

Deputies said he entered the water voluntarily and moments later went under out of sight. Divers found Mr. Gibson in about 18 feet of water.
