LANSING (WLNS): Day 2 of the trial for former Michigan State University Gymnastic’s coach wrapped up in the court room today.
Victims testified that they were abused by Larry Nassar and they went to Kathie Klages to report it, but then backed off after feeling pressure from the former gymnastics coach.
Kathie Klages is facing charges of lying to police in relation with Larry Nassar.
This morning, the defense tried to throw out the case saying there are no material facts about any of that and it’s circumstantial evidence.
“I am denying the defendants’ motions for directed verdict,” she said.
Prosecutors say Klages was told about Nassar years ago and dismissed the allegations.
Klages told police she did not know anything when the abuse came to light.
This morning, the defense called 10 witnesses to the stand trying to attack the credibility of the prosecution.
The defense team asked witnesses all the same question: “do you recall any meetings during your Spartan youth group, participants that involved MSU gymnast?”
They responded no each time.
One of the witnesses the defense called to the stand was former men’s gymnastics coach, Rick Atkinson.
He helped start Spartan Youth Program with Klages.
He said he rarely met with gymnasts at Spartan Youth and would be surprised if Klages did either.
“She dealt with a lot of parents, with hiring the coaches. She dealt with signing the kids up on sign-up day. But that is about it, as I recall. Was she primarily behind the scenes? Yes, I would say so,” he said.
The prosecution tried to chip away that: “in terms of Kathy Klages, you know who that is right? Yep, she was the MSU gym coach while you were there? Yep,” the prosecution said. “Any meetings that would have taken place in her office on the third floor, you wouldn’t have been aware of, correct? Not unless I was invited.”
The judge said she feels confident the jury will start deliberating tomorrow.
