The Macomb County Sheriff’s Department presented a request for a new jail which could cost between $370-390 million to the Board of Commissioners. Potential funding mechanisms for the project have yet to be discussed by the Board of Commissioners, which is the body that would approve the budget for the project.
At this point though, a new jail in Macomb County is simply a concept that the Sheriff’s Department has identified as a solution.
The potential new jail would be built where the current jail stands which prompted questions by commissioners regarding the general need for a new jail versus renovating the existing Macomb County Jail.
The Board also approved additional funding for schematic designs for the proposed jail, stating they needed to know more detail about the facility before discussing funding options.
