IONIA COUNTY, Mich. (WLNS) - Another deadly day in our state's waters as a 42-year-old man drowns while canoeing in Ionia County.
Police have identified that 42-year-old in Ionia County as Earl Phillip Sensenig. They say he along with multiple children were canoeing on a pond when it capsized.
Multiple police and rescue teams responded to the scene which was located at a home on North Stage Road in Ionia County.
According to the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post, only the children were wearing life jackets when the canoe overturned making it easier for crews to rescue them.
However, Sensenig slipped under the water wearing his work clothes and heavy boots and never re-surfaced.
After searching for almost two hours, rescuers found the 42-year-old submerged in the pond.
He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities say lack of visibility and the depth of the muddy and swampy pond water created challenges for crews searching for Sensenig.
The family has been notified and are getting help from victim advocates.
