LANSING, MI (WLNS) – Training to become an officer for the Michigan Department of Corrections is free right now, something that would have cost thousands.
That is because they are short on staff and want to fill those positions fast.
Officials say hundreds of corrections officers have retired in recent months and the department has been struggling to fill them since switching to a new training program.
The program costs new recruits $4,000 each but with a need at an all-time high, the department says they are reopening free training academies in the Upper Peninsula and in Lansing.
Last year the department paid $60 million in overtime costs.
1,000 corrections officers need to be hired this year to get back to a normal staff.
