LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – There is a warning today about scammers trying to get your personal information over the phone.

Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson says someone is making phone calls impersonating a state employee and asking people for credit card and Social Security information.

Caller ID will show a valid Secretary of State office phone number but the scammers are pretending to be legitimate by using a technique called “phishing”.

Johnson emphasized that the Secretary of State’s Office does not make unsolicited calls to customers asking for personal or financial information.

If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of the caller’s claim to be a Secretary of State employee, hang up and call the Department of State Information Center at 888-767-6424.

As a reminder you should never give your PINs, passwords or access to bank accounts or credit card number to someone you do not know.
