HAMBURG TOWNSHIP, MI (WLNS) – Mmmm donuts.

CBS Detroit affiliate WWJ-AM says volunteers have lined up about 24,000 yeast, ringed donuts at a festival in Michigan to set what they believe is a Guinness World Record.

Work on the “Hamburg Mile” started Friday morning in Hamburg Township, northwest of Detroit. Organizers said that when completed, more than 5,280 feet – one mile – had been laid.

A surveyor and witnesses were on hand. If verified as accurate, it will eclipse the 1,841 feet 10 inches set last year in Germany.

Hamburg Enhanced Recreation Organization president Joanna Hardesty says a machine attached to a tractor dropped the days-old donuts in a line. Volunteers followed, making sure they touched.

The donuts have one more purpose. They’ll be served later to farm animals.
