ISABELLA COUNTY, MI – Two people were arrested following a standoff with police Wednesday morning at an Isabella County hotel.

Deputies with the Isabella County Sheriff’s Office were contacted by the Clare County Sheriff’s Office around 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 regarding a 22-year-old Saginaw man who was a parole absconder with multiple felony warrants.

The man was also wanted in connection with recent stolen vehicles as well as fleeing and eluding cases, per a statement from Isabella County Sheriff Michael Main.

Law enforcement officials learned the man was in a room at the Days Inn off Pickard Road in Union Township near Mount Pleasant.

A warrant was obtained by the Clare County Sheriff’s Office to make entry in the room and make an arrest, Main said. Information was received that the suspect may be armed.

Deputies knocked on the room’s door and heard what Main said was the man and a 28-year-old Shelby Township woman barricading the door from the inside.

The pair broke through the drywall from their room to the adjacent room, broke through the ceiling, and entered a mechanical area between the ceiling and a sub-ceiling, Main said.

The pair then broke through another portion of the ceiling designed for fire breaks and moved throughout the hotel attic space.

Members of the Isabella County Emergency Services team were deployed and began to search the attic area for the pair.

A negotiator with the emergency services team attempted to communicate with the man but was unsuccessful.

Deputies located the woman tangled up in the attic’s piping system.

She was eventually able to get down and was placed under arrest for felony destruction of property and possession of methamphetamine.

The man continued to move through the ceiling area for a few hours longer.

Emergency service team members entered the ceiling area and were able to push the suspect over the hotel’s pool area.

The man fell through the ceiling and was holding onto its framework before he eventually landed in the pool and was taken into custody.

The incident remains under investigation.
