Free toy store helping families in need this Christmas

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) — On Christmas morning, kids are very excited to see what kind of presents are under the tree.

But for some families who are struggling financially, they can’t always afford to buy gifts for their kids.

6 News visited a huge toy operation in Jackson that’s coming to the rescue.

Tearsa Harmon just moved to Michigan from Arizona, and is having trouble finding work.

But thanks to the Priceless Gift Toy Store, she has one less thing to worry about.

“I am touched because I thought I wasn’t able to give them a good Christmas being new here. People have been so wonderful,” Harmon told 6 News as she shopped for her two kids.

Organizer Wendy Wight says she hears stories like this every day.

“There are a lot of people who are really struggling. It’s wonderful to be able to do something,” Wight said.

Wednesday afternoon, the line to get in went out the door.

Located in the old Tomlinson School building on Jackson’s east side, the store’s shelves are packed full of toys.

All of them are free to families in need.

“We give you a grocery bag for each one of your children and you can choose what items you want,” Wight said,

The toys come from local schools, businesses, organizations, and families who no longer need them.

Behind the scenes there’s an army of elves who make sure these gently used toys are ready for more girls and boys.

This operation has been going strong for 11 years, meaning they’ve helped thousands of families have a Christmas.

You can help by donating toys or volunteering.

While the store shows how much families are struggling, it also represents a generous community.

“I am very proud to be a Jacksonian,” Wight said.

Harmon says she’s now looking forward to Christmas.

“This is going to make them so happy. All the little ones are going to be ecstatic,” Harmon said.

The priceless gift toy store is located at 730 Tomlinson Street in Jackson.

It’s open Wednesday to Saturday from 1-5 p.m.

On Thursdays they’re open until 7 p.m.

It closes on December 15.

Shoppers are encouraged to bring identification, and only visit one time this season.
