Friends, family mourn slain party store clerk as investigation continues

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) – We’re following the latest developments in a murder investigation in Jackson.

Right before Thanksgiving, a group of suspects robbed a Jackson party store, shooting and killing the clerk.

Police continue to investigate the case as family and friends make funeral plans.

It’s almost been two weeks since a brutal murder happened inside one of Jack Singh’s stores.

“It’s a big loss. Me, my family and friends are upset and really shocked,” said Singh, owner of the Log Cabin Party Store.

The night before Thanksgiving, three suspects entered the Log Cabin Party Store at Fourth and Franklin Streets, immediately shot the clerk in the neck, grabbed cash, and fled the scene.

The clerk, 31-year-old Mehman Singh, died at the hospital.

Singh came to the U.S. from India to work and have a better life.

“He was a very cool, very nice guy. He was very friendly to all. A lot of people love him around this neighborhood,” Singh said.

$18,000 has been raised online for funeral expenses using a GoFundMe page.

Singh says Mehman doesn’t have any family in the area.

So the money raised will be used to send his body to California where he has relatives.

“His dad wanted to take his ashes to India and immerse them in the water. That’s in our religion,” Singh said.

The Jackson Police Department has released two stills from security cameras at the store.

In the pictures there’s a clear view of one of the suspects.

Police have also offered a $2,500 reward for anyone with information that leads to capture of the killers.

“I think if somebody knows that guy they should contact the police so that he can be punished,” Singh said.

Singh owns three party stores south of downtown that employs some of Jackson’s small Indian community.

He says the neighborhood has become increasingly violent.

“It’s getting worse for the past 4-5 years now in Jackson,” Singh said.

If you recognize the person in the pictures or have any information call Jackson Police at 517-768-8722.
