The investigation is continuing today into a fatal shooting in Ionia County Tuesday night.

According to the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were answering a burglary in progress call on the 4000 block of East Musgrove Highway.

When they arrived they found Justin Eddy, 40, of Lansing shot to death and a homeowner claiming self-defense.

Here’s what deputies say happened.

According to the homeowner, he found Eddy inside his house, claiming he had been chased into the house by a stranger who was still outside.

The homeowner armed himself and, with Eddy, went outside to find the supposed prowler.

No trace of another person was found outside so the two men ended their search and went back inside.

Once in the house Eddy began, according to deputies, acting erratically and attacked the homeowner.

That’s when the homeowner shot and killed Eddy.

Investigators say there is no known connection between Eddy and the homeowner but they suspect alcohol and drugs may have been factors.

The homeowner has not been arrested and is cooperating with investigators.

The case has been turned over to the Ionia County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
