EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The hours, days, and weeks of football preparation were all put on display for 60 minutes tonight as the MSU football team opened up its season against the Furman Paladins.

And while thousands of fans had their eyes on the game played on the field, many preparations were made off the field as well.

As the Michigan State Spartans kicked off their season opener against the Furman Paladins, green and white could be seen everywhere and so could police officers who were doing their part making sure people stayed safe.

“Things have been…gone really well so far,” said Captain Doug Monette of the Michigan State University Police Department.

Monette says on game days, the department works with other law enforcement agencies to keep an eye out on campus.

“We have patrol that responds to calls, we have different traffic units that assist getting people in and around campus, information units, we have officers that are inside the stadium,” Monette stated.

And their hard work and dedication to the Spartan nation clearly shows.

“There’s been a lot of officers around the campus, absolutely we feel very safe,” said Lisa Williamson.

Williamson is a proud MSU Spartan fan and she says the commitment police officers have to ensure safety on campus does not go unnoticed, especially today.

“Just kind of watching, keeping an eye on everything, making sure that things don’t get out of hand with the tailgate,” said Willamson.

“Well we take the community policing approach as we interact with our community members, our faculty, staff and our students,” Monette stated.

Whether it’s game day or not… MSU police say they take pride in what they’re doing.

“We’re here to serve our community and that’s one of the things that we come here as far as employees with Michigan State University police department those are some of the things that we do…as far as to provide safety, security and to educate and enforcement,” said Monette.
