Michigan opens hunting season on type of duck

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan’s early hunting season for teals is set to start.  Teals are a type of small duck.

The hunt will start Thursday, and will run through September 7.

This is the final year in a three-year experimental early teal hunting period. Hunters are allowed to take up to six teal daily and hunt from sunrise to sunset.  Officials say the early hunt is being allowed because Michigan’s teal populations are growing.

After this year, the Department of Natural Resources will evaluate how well hunters have done at distinguishing between teal and other species. Waterfowl specialist Barbara Avers says the hunters’ performance will determine whether there are more early teal seasons.

Hunting season also begins Thursday for other migratory species, including early goose, Virginia and sora rails, common snipe and common gallinules, also known as moorhens.
