Michigan toddler shot with gun father left unattended

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WLNS/MLive) – A man brought his 2-year-old son to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound, the Battle Creek Police Department reports.

A 26-year-old Battle Creek man arrived at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital with his injured son in the afternoon, police said in a news release Friday.

The father has told investigators he was at home playing a video game and had his gun on the couch next to him while his son was sleeping, police said.

The man told police he got up to use the bathroom and heard a shot, police said. He reported to police he saw his son with an injury to his butt and took him to the hospital.

The boy had a non-life threatening injury and was taken to a Kalamazoo hospital for further treatment. He is expected to be released from the hospital within the next day or two, police said in the news release.

The investigation is continuing into how the boy was shot, police said. Police said the case is under investigation and potential charges could include careless/reckless use of a gun, reckless discharge of a firearm up to child neglect or abuse. No names are being released at this time, police said.
