LANSING, TWP., Mich (WLNS) - LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - A teenager is behind bars tonight following a home invasion sexual assault in Lansing Township.
Lansing Township Police spent the early morning hours chasing down a 17-year-old for breaking into a woman's home and assaulting her. It happened on the 400 block of Clement Road.
Lansing Township Police Chief Adam Kline says when they got to the woman's home around 5:30 this morning, her attacker ran out the back door while holding her and then threw the woman at police before taking off down the road.
He led police on a chase that lasted about two hours.
Multiple agencies and a K9 unit helped out trying to catch the man, which they eventually did in a remote area near Stoll Road in Eaton County around 7:30 this morning.
The teen was taken to a local hospital for injuries he got during the chase. The woman was also hospitalized for injuries she received during the assault.
However, Chief Kline says if it wasn't for this woman calling 911 when she did, police would not have arrived to her home so quickly, and for that he applauds her.
“She heard the noise, heard somebody enter her home, and she started calling 911,” said Chief Kline. “She put the phone down and that's when the suspect was already upon her. She didn't have chance to tell the dispatch where she was; however, they did an excellent job in pinpointing where she was and getting us close enough that we could find her. It takes quite a bit of, I guess cognizance to get that done, so I thought she was very courageous in doing that.”
Chief Kline says in this case, the teenager attacker did not know the woman he assaulted.
Kline wants people to keep an eye out for anything suspicious going on around their homes and if they do have any concerns, to give police a call.
