UPDATE: Gunman dies, deputy injured in Jackson County shooting

UPDATE (Thursday, April 18, 2019 5:37AM): 

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office:

Sheriff Steve Rand reports on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at 9:05pm, Deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, were dispatched to the 1300 block of Westlane Drive in Summit Township for a domestic dispute.

While attempting to locate the suspect in the residence a 34 year old man from Flint opened fire on deputies.

One deputy was struck multiple times.

Deputies returned fire and the suspect died of his injuries.

The injured deputy was transported to Henry Ford Allegiance with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies involved in this incident will be placed on administrative leave pending the completion of an investigation by the major crimes task force and review by the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney per department policy.

The investigation has been turned over to the Jackson County Major Crimes Task Force.

The task force is made up of Detectives from the City of Jackson Police, Blackman Leoni Department of Public Safety, and the Michigan State Police and the Jackson County Office of the Sheriff.

Members of the Sheriff’s Office will not be participating in the investigation because of the direct involvement in the incident.

UPDATE (12:17): A SWAT tactical vehicle is on the scene.

UPDATE (12:07): Police are focusing on a house on Westlane.

UPDATE (12:03): All police lights have been turned off and officers are hidden behind their vehicles. The scene is still active. The Westlane entrance is blocked off.

ORIGINAL STORY: A large police presence near the corner of Park and Roosevelt Rd. in Jackson County.

Officers are walking around with automatic rifles.

Authorities blocked off a portion of Park Rd. in Summit Township.

Currently police departments are Jackson County, City of Jackson, Summit Township Police, and the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety. Additionally, Emergency medical services are around the scene.

The Michigan State Police were on the scene at one point as well.
