UPDATE: I-96 backed up after semi truck engulfed in flames

UPDATE: All lanes have been cleared and traffic is moving again at regular speeds.

Traffic was backed up for miles on the I 96 west near Webberville due to what looks like a fully engulfed semi truck

Around 7:30 this morning the semi-tractor trailer caught fire on I-96 near Webberville. Lt. Darren Green of the Michigan State Police says the driver was not injured as he was able to pull over and get out safely after seeing flames. The truck was carrying a load of baked goods out of Ontario, Canada.

State police say their preliminary investigation shows some kind of mechanical failure which caused the tires or brake lines to catch fire. The fire spread quickly to the rest of the truck it soon became fully engulfed. State motor carriers will do a more thorough inspection to determine the reason for the fire.

Both lanes were closed for two and a half to three hours and one lane is still closed as of this afternoon. More details will be provided on this developing story.
