UPDATE: City Manager Aaron Sheridan appoints Officer Richard Barry as Interim Police Chief of the Potterville City Police Department.

ORIGINAL STORY: Potterville Police Chief Shane Bartlett today faces three felony counts after authorities accused him of aiding his wife in making an alleged false report of sexual assault.

Bartlett is charged by the Barry County Prosecutor’s Office with Misconduct in Office, lying to a Peace Officer and making a false report of a felony.

If he were found guilty of all three charges he could be sentenced to 13 years in prison and $17,000 in fines.

According to authorities the charges stem from a Michigan State Police investigation that all started with a complaint by Kellie Bartlett, accusing an Eaton County Deputy of sexual assault.

She was a clerk in the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office.

As part of the investigation, Shane Bartlett, Kellie Bartlett’s husband, was interviewed by a detective.

Questions began to be asked about Shane Bartlett’s statement early in the case but it took several months to analyze his phone and work computer records.

Last September, Kellie Bartlett was charged with several counts, including making a false report.

Shane Bartlett was arraigned today in Charlotte District Court in Eaton County. His bond was set at $10,000.00 personal recognizance.
