Mid-Michigan prepares for travel during winter storm

LANSING, MI (WLNS) – Line Deschenes landed at Lansing’s airport earlier Thursday, right as it started to snow.

“My family say get home as fast as possible, it’s coming, so I was fortunate to come this morning,” said Deschenes, a Dewitt resident. “Normally I come on Friday, but I would have been delayed.”

Deschenes is just one of many people taking extra precautions when flying in this winter weather. And with heavy snowfall expected to hit the East Coast this weekend, travelers need to prepare.

“All the relationship with the traveler is directly with the airline and providing their transportation to the destination,” said Nicole Noll-Williams of the Capital Region International Airport.

Noll-Williams says the responsibility falls on the airline, not the airport.

“You look at the airport as, as being a facility, and we make sure that there’s the ability for businesses being able to run, like the airlines being able to operate,” Noll-Williams said.

You can ask your airline what their policies are on rescheduling flights, overnight accommodations and even flight refunds. And if you have a travel agent, Kevin Hamilton of East Lansing’s Conlin Travel says they’ll take care of it for you.

“A couple days ago we sent a warning out that the weather was probably coming and to look if there are alternatives for them,” Hamilton said.

Officials say there are plenty of steps you can take to make sure you’re up to date with your travel plans, but the most important thing is to be proactive.

“For this weekend, it’s contact your airlines, make sure you know what your flight options are and if your flights are running on time,” Noll-Williams said.

And Deschenes has a plan for checking her flights.

“This (cell phone) is the best tool invented for that. And I check if they’re on time.”

Keeping an eye on your phone – and your eyes to the skies.
