New poll numbers on Governor Gretchen Whitmer reveal mixed results just two months into her term.
When asked what they think of Whitmer in an EPIC-MRA poll, Michiganders say she does pretty well. Of those surveyed 43 percent have a “favorable” opinion of her and just 35 percent say their opinion is “unfavorable,” an 18-point margin in her favor.
But when asked how she’s doing after a couple of months in office, the numbers switch. 36 percent say she’s doing an “excellent” or “pretty good” job so far, but 40 percent say “just fair” or “poor,” which is a four-point margin against her.
Timing may have played a role in the outcome of the poll, according to one of its administrators Bernie Porn. Earlier this week Governor Whitmer proposed a new budget and spending plan. That proposal included a 45 cent gas tax increase and more money for K-12 schools. Porn says that recent announcement may have made a difference in the results.
“There’s slightly more on the negative end for Governor Whitmer,” Porn says, “but that could well be in reaction to her budget message. A lot of it hasn’t sunk in yet.”
The poll surveyed 600 people and has a margin of error of +/- four percent.
