Murder trial begins for Jackson Co. teen accused of killing his brother

JACKSON, MI (WLNS) – Opening statements were delivered and witnesses took the stand inside a Jackson county court as a jury trial got underway for a teen accused of shooting and killing his brother on Dec. 6, 2014.

Prosecutors say 17-year-old Riley Spitler shot his brother Patrick at their family’s home in the 5000 block of Big Rock Drive in Blackman Township.

Officials say Spitler, who was then 16 walked into his 21-year-old brother’s room with a gun, said “do you feel lucky?” and pulled the trigger, shooting his brother.

Spitler told officials he thought the gun was unloaded.

The shooting was initially ruled accidental. After further investigation Spitler was arrested and charged with open murder.
