The U.S. Food & Drug Administration wants consumers, tattoo artists and retailers to be aware about a number of tattoo inks that have been recalled because they are “contaminated with bacteria.”

According to the FDA, contaminated tattoo inks can cause infections and lead to serious health issues when injected into a person’s skin.

Before getting a tattoo, consumers should ask their tattoo artist about the inks they use and avoid the ones that have been recalled.

The FDA said it plans to continue working with manufacturers and retailers to remove contaminated products from the market.

Anyone who’s had infection symptoms or an injury after getting a tattoo should consult their doctor, let their tattoo artist know and report the issue to the FDA.
