New bill could reduce penalty for underage drinkers

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Minors caught with alcohol in Michigan may get a lighter sentence for their first offense.

The Michigan Senate passed a bill that could make the first offense of a Minor in Possession a civil infraction instead of a misdemeanor. The second offense would be a misdemeanor and the third would remain unchanged.

The bills sponsor, Grand Ledge Sen. Rick Jones says that kids shouldn’t be jailed for having a case of beer. One opponent, Republican Senator Tonya Schuimaker, voted against the bill, saying it’s against the law.
