LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – We first brought you this story on Friday about 41-year-old Kevin Devenbaugh, who was arrested on Friday facing two criminal counts.
One for “using computers to commit crimes” and the other for “accosting children for immoral purposes.”
But even though he’s off the streets now, parents are concerned of what he may have done in the past to hurt their children.
After Devenbaugh was exposed on Facebook live in July for what he thought he was a meet up with a fifteen-year-old girl, officials from South Church of the Nazarene, the church where Devenbaugh is a member, spoke out.
They say it was to let the community know that nothing criminal happened under their watch.
Even though Devenbaugh is now behind bars awaiting future court dates, churchgoers say they’re concerned, after learning from members of the community that Devenbaugh surrounded himself with kids at the church.
“Kevin attended our church for many years,” said Lead Pastor Brad Dyrness.
Dyrness says since he’s been pastor, Devenbaugh hasn’t worked with children.
“I have been the lead pastor at this church for three years and Kevin has not been working with the kids in that time. I can’t speak to the time before that,” said Dyrness.
One of the concerned parents sent this screenshot from 2015 to 6 News, she did not want to talk with us on camera, but the post shows Devenbaugh once reviewed South Nazerine’s Young Adult Ministries Program and gave it five stars.
However, Pastor Dyrness wants members to know if something did happen and they became aware of it, they would’ve reported it.
“I have not spoken to anyone specifically about this, nor has anyone come to me and said I’m concerned that this is going on in our congregation,” said Dyrness.
Pastor Dyrness also mentioned that the church has not yet been contacted by police regarding Devenbaugh. He also mentioned that if anyone has questions or concerns, they’re encouraged to reach out to him or other church staff.
