New jobs and technology rolling into Michigan


(WLNS) – International manufacturing supplier Gestamp is bringing jobs and new technology to Michigan.

An expansion to the Mason Gestamp plant includes a $90 million investment for construction, new machinery and positions.

The 500,000 square foot plant will add 200,000 square feet to the Mason plant and 40 jobs to expand its heat stamping technology.

Not only does this project bring more jobs to the state, but it puts the gears into over-drive as Michigan speeds back torward the top of the manufacturing industry.

“This new technology will be the only technology in Michigan,” Mason Gestamp plant director Rob Schrameyer said.

The new addition will expand heat stamping, which creates lighter products, and according to company president Jeff Wilson, that has multiple benefits for drivers.

“The lighter we can make the products, the lighter the vehicle, the less energy its using, the better gas mileage and more environmentally friendly,” Gestamp CEO and President Wilson explained.

Getting the international supplier to plant more jobs and technology in Michigan wasn’t an easy task. But its the end result of a joint effort between economic developer LEAP, the Michigan Economic Development Cooperation and the city of Mason.

“That translates into new tax dollars in the city of Mason, to the county, to the state of Michigan, income tax, corporate tax, property tax, and so forth,” LEAP President Bob Tresize said.

Schrameyer says this will add jobs and technology, but also secures the more than 500 employees who already work there.

“It’s just a very exciting opportunity to know that this plant is going to be here for years to come,” Schrameyer said.

The plant will break ground in the coming weeks, and once the structure is done, the new machines will go in and hiring will begin. New parts from  the expansion are expected to roll out in 2018.
