New Renewable Energy Initiative Makes Lansing A Leader In ‘Going Green’

News

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor announced his plans to purchase 100 percent renewable energy for all City buildings by July 1st.

If approved, Lansing will be the first City in Michigan to do so.

Schor will propose his 2019-2020 budget on March 25th; In it, he allocated $280,000 for the new initiative. That money will go to the Lansing Board of Water and Light and its new “Greenwise Power Program”.

The Program which uses wind, solar and hydropower, is open to any BWL customer. The average household will see a $7 increase in their monthly bill if they opt-in.

Schor says the City will see a $10,000-$15,000 decrease each year in energy spending. The money they save will go towards renovating City buildings to make them more energy efficient.
