INGHAM COUNTY, Mich. (WLNS) – With summer rolling around, this also brings road work.
Road projects are happening all around the state to improve transportation for commuters. Starting this weekend, new road repair projects will bring construction to multiple freeways in Mid-Michigan on an eleven mile stretch on I-96 between M-52 and M-59. The project is expected to last until November.
Michael Frezell of the Michigan Department of Transportation advises drivers to stay clear of the area.
“We advise people to plan ahead, look at alternative routes, and try to maybe change their routing to avoid any major backups,” said Frezell.
Roads will be down to one lane daily from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. starting with westbound traffic this weekend. Construction will also happen during four weekends of the eight month period.
Frezell says that they are going to avoid holidays and college graduation dates. I-94 in Jackson County will also start construction in June.
“We understand I-96 is a major corridor between Lansing and Detroit, and we are trying to avoid the impact but we do need to maintain these roads,” said Frezell.
Only one direction of traffic will be under construction at a time. The purpose of these projects is to fix potholes and keep the roads safe for drivers.
