Officers and families gather together during memorial

JACKSON, MI (WLNS) – Jackson Police officers came together to remember those who sacrificed their lies in the line of duty.

Jackson County Referee Allison Bates said, “I think people underestimate the personal drain on our police officers of not only being society’s protectors but also being the clean up crew for the mess that humanity leaves in its wake.”

“Too many of our colleagues, friends, loved ones are missing but in both spirit and memory they are still with us,” said Jackson County Sheriff Steve Rand.

Some spoke on the passing of Trooper Chad Dermyer who was shot and killed this spring.

Former NFL player and Jackson native Russell Davis said, “I was in Virginia the day the officer…when the former Jackson officer was gunned down. Very close to the city of Richmond. And, that news really bothered me. Quite a bit…because it was so unnecessary.”

Each family placed a flower in a wreath to remember their loved ones lives.
