Officials investigate house fire in Meridian Township

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLNS) – UPDATE (5 p.m.) – A massive house fire broke out early this morning in Meridian Township, leaving not much left but the structure of the home.

“This house which had the fire was really burning from all corners,” said Mehboob Fatteh, who lives next door to the home that caught on fire.

It happened around 1 a.m. on the 3600 block of Beech Tree Lane in Okemos, with multiple fire crews battling the fire for hours.

“I had to wake up because I was fast asleep and when seeing all these lights and the fire there, I was shocked,” said Fatteh.

Fatteh says embers were falling on his roof.

“Nobody wants to go through this. It’s really bad,” said Fatteh.

Meridian Township Fire Chief Michael Hamel says two people lived in the home and they’re both safe.

“They’re fortunate that they got out,” said Hamel. “There’s a lot of fire when they woke up, smoke detectors did work which is a good thing, that’s what they’re for, and they they left the home and went across the street and called 911 instead of trying to save valuables and things like that.”

Now Fatteh says he plans to help the couple with whatever they may need.

“It’s our obligation. We know they are friends, but even if they were not friends, our neighbors are neighbors, they are part of family here,” said Fatteh.

The Meridian Township Fire Department is still investigating the exact cause of the fire.
