EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– People from across mid-Michigan got to try their hand at a sport you may not have heard of: Pickleball.
It’s a combination of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, and it doesn’t involve actual pickles. Players and fans say it’s a bit like playing ping-pong or table tennis, while standing on a ping-pong table.
Millions of people play pickleball around the country and over two hundred players competed in a tournament at the Sparrow Michigan Athletic Club. The sport is most popular with Baby Boomers but coach Daniel Howard says there’s something in it for players of all ages.
“We have division which are age 10+, we have age divisions which go to 60+,” Howard says. “Pickleball in general covers a really broad range of athletes from teenagers and younger to seniors. I’ve seen players in their nineties playing pickleball.”
Some players drove as many as five hours and across state lines to play in the tournament, which runs through Sunday. Howard says he looks forward to seeing the pickleball community continue to grow here in Michigan.
