(WLNS) – The Michigan Department of Corrections is trying to fix an issue for crooks behind bars.
The director of the department, Heidi Washington is considering a plan to lower the number of inmates in the state and downsize the department.
Washington says 29 percent of Michigan’s inmates are locked up for probation violations and last year that was 9,000 people. Her plan would provide job training, rehabilitation and other programs to keep the inmate return rate down.
Washington says through the plan more money will be saved and the department will have the option of closing prisons in the future.
