Plans for new convention center in Jackson taking shape

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) – A major construction project in Jackson County is taking a big leap forward.

Jackson County and American 1 Credit Union are working together to bring a new convention center to downtown Jackson.

The building will replace a large parking lot at the Jackson County Fairgrounds.

American 1 hosted an event on the site Friday morning, revealing a major funding development, a $4 million investment from Jackson County

“We’re excited. We were waiting for all of this to finalize before we were announcing it. And at this point we’re ready to move forward full steam ahead,” said Kristi Edgar, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for American 1 Credit Union.

Plans for the American 1 Convention Center are still in the works.

But we do know it will be a comfortable and functional building that can hold 500 people.

“This will be a different space to hold those higher end events. What we’re anticipating is a large open space that can be broken down into smaller rooms, it will have a full kitchen, full catering services will be able to take place,” Edgar said.

Downtown Jackson is lacking a venue like this.

The county parks director says the convention center could spur development in the area.

“Our goal is to attract as many people to Jackson as we can,” said Jeff Hovarter, Jackson County Parks Director. “ The fact that it is in the urban center, downtown, makes it a terrific opportunity to leverage what we have in terms of facilities and create events and entertainment the other weeks of the year that the fair shuts down.”

Organizers say they hope to break ground sometime in fall 2017.
